Privacy

We follow the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 to keep your personal information safe.

We make sure that meat, poultry, seafood, and pet food processing in Victoria meets high standards.

We do this through licensing, inspections, compliance programs and quality checks.

Our role includes monitoring food businesses so that they comply with the law. We can take legal action when meat, poultry, seafood, or pet food is processed, sold, or transported without the right licences.

How we collect information

We collect personal information to do our job under the Meat Industry Act 1993 and the Seafood Safety Act 2003. For example we:

  • ask for the name of the person or company applying for a licence
  • need a postal address, which could be a home or business address
  • check for convictions to make sure that a person is suitable for a licence
  • record complaints so we can deal with them properly.

Usually personal information comes directly from the person involved. There are times when we get personal information from other sources. This could be when we are investigating something illegal.

Keeping your personal data safe

Your personal information is never shared unless it is:

  • needed for law enforcement reasons.
  • required by law.

We never sell your information or use it for marketing.

We are required to keep your personal information private by the Meat Industry Act 1993.

Your right to see and update your information

You can ask us:

  • for a copy of your personal information that we are storing
  • to fix, correct or update your information.

You will need to prove who you are before we can give you  personal data.
